Semyon Bilmes – The Sight-size method, a Critical Overview

Born and educated in Russia, graduated from A. Azimzade Academy of Art in Baku. Immigrated to New York in 1980, graduated from the Parson’s School of Design in 1985.

Worked as a freelance illustrator in editorial, advertising and book illustration.

Illustrated campaigns for AT&T, CBS, General Mills, Warner Lambert, Smirnoff Vodka, Citibank, Clairol, Western Union, Alaska Airlines, and Phillip Morris, Harry and David to name a few. 

Created covers of many books and periodicals, such as Reader’s Digest and The New York Times.  Oil painting, “Lady in a Red Turban,” was selected for the cover of American Showcase, the annual directory of top illustrators and designers in the country.

  • 1990-2000 – Founded and taught in Bilmes Art School
  • 2003-2010 – Founded and taught in Ashland Academy of Art
  • 2010-present – Founder and Master Instructor of the Atelier Maui
